Hints & Tips for Worming Your Dog

Worming your dog is not only an essential part of your dog's preventive health program, it is also necessary due to human health risks associated with worm infection. Below are some important points to remember with regard to worming your dog.

· You should worm your adult dog every 3 months.

· If you own breeding bitches, worm them before mating time, toward the end of pregnancy, 3 weeks post whelping and at the end of weaning. Check that the worming medication you are using is suitable for use in pregnant and lactating bitches.

· Puppies require worming at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age. Then worm every 3 months.

· Know your dog's weight before worming them. If you don't know your dog's weight, get them weighed. Your local veterinarian will be able to help you with this.

· The flea is the intermediate host for Dipylidium caninum tapeworm. As part of its treatment and prevention, institute a thorough flea control program to prevent reinfestation.

· Ensure your pet is worm free before placing him in boarding facilities, shows or obedience classes.

· Educate your children regarding good hygiene practices (i.e. washing their hands and face), after playing with family dog.

· These recommendations are minimal. Under high worm challenge conditions. It would be necessary to worm your dog more often. Consult your veterinarian.
