The Truth About Vaccinating Your Dogs

Top level Pfizer Animal Health

Some pet owners follow this number one rule, some still don’t.

Vaccinating your dog is a simple procedure that is routinely done by all veterinarians. Vaccinations are safe and effective. Many diseases that were once considered fatal to dogs are now under control due to the use of modern vaccines.

What are vaccinations?
These are molecules that when administered into the body, produce substances that are called antibodies. These antibodies are produced by cells, which originate in the bone marrow and multiply in the spleen, thymus and lymph nodes.

How does vaccination works?
When the dog’s body encounters the actual disease agent, the lymphocytes respond very quickly, producing antibodies that neutralize the disease. This rapid production of antibodies is only possible if the animal has been previously vaccinated.

When should I have my dog vaccinated?
· At the very least, a minimum of two multivalent vaccines containing Distemper and Parvovirus are given 3 to 4 weeks apart to all puppies over three month of age. Rabies vaccination should also be given. Other diseases such as Coronavirus, Bortadella, and Lyme Disease require different vaccination protocols.

· Young puppies are usually given their first set of vaccinations at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Additional vaccinations are given three to four weeks until the puppy is 16 weeks old.

Are there side effects to vaccination?
Yes. But these reactions are very mild. Muscle aches, slight fever, and drowsiness among dogs are the most common side effects.

The Pfizer Animal Health Group, a Pfizer division that produces vaccines, antibiotics and anti-parasitics for companion animals tells pet owners that vaccinating dogs is a procedure that should be neglected.

Taking one’s dog to the vet and following vaccination schedules will go a long way in preventing health problems with you dog.
